later in the alphabet and the result will be a palindrome – though one that doesn’t make any words.
2. The first and last name of someone who became better known in 2025 sounds like an old-timey Western term for what this person’s associates accused their opponents of trying to do. Who is the person and what did they accuse?
3. A certain person – not new in the news – claimed in 2025 that they were a certain type of person.

4. Name a popular food in two words, 5 and 4 letters. Change the last letter of the 4 letter word to “h”, and the combined 9 letters will be the first name of someone who came into the news in 2025.Hint: An abbreviated Americanized version of the first name combined with a phonetic version of the last name will name a significant character on a classic television show.
5. A well-known actor, who has won numerous Emmys, reached a certain milestone in 2025.
Change the short vowel sound in the first name to a long vowel sound, and the result will be part of their last name.
Who is the actor?
6. Name 2 people who were once famous foes.
Who are the foes and who is the award winner?
7. The first name of a former singer and actress who passed in 2025 consists of 3 first names in consecutive order.
The second name is a bit obscure, though there is a director/producer/writer with that name who has been nominated twice for an Academy Award, and numerous other awards.

“Nine-digit discount: $20.26!”
Will Shortz’s January 4th Weekend Edition Sunday puzzle (created by Ed Pegg Jr., who runs the website mathpuzzle.com.) reads:
Take the nine digits: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9. You can group some of them and add arithmetic operations to get 2011 like this: 1 + 23 ÷ 4 x 5 x 67 - 8 + 9. If you do these operations in order from left to right, you get 2011. Well, 2011 was 15 years ago. Can you group some of the digits and add arithmetic symbols in a different way to make 2026? The digits from 1 to 9 need to stay in that order. I know of two different solutions, but you need to find only one of them.
Puzzleria!s Riffing Off Shortz And Pegg Entrees read:

ReplyDeleteFit a synonym of one of the Schpuzzle words inside a synonym of "haul" to get the middle name of the person in Appetizer #2.
DeleteVery nice observation, Paul.
DeleteThe middle name of that person in Appetizer #2 was his father's first name. ("Bunyea" was that father's middle name!)...
But, back to that "middle name of the person in Appetizer #2..." It contains 7 letters. Letters 1, 2, 4 6 and 7 spell a synonym of letters 2, 3, 4 and 5! (That's just "5" followed by and exclamation mark, not "5 factorial," or 5 X 4 X 3 x 2 x 1 = 120).
LegoWhoObservesThatTheDad'sMiddleName(Bunyea)IsAFamilyNameThatIsEvenMoreFunYeah!
The third, fourth and fifth letters of the last name spell a common opinion of the person and his associates.

Thanks for the hints. Still missing App #3 and Entree #6. For App #3, based on the picture, I suspect I know who the person is (not Entree #8!), but can't remember or find that statement.
DeleteLego, I think you inadvertently published the answer to Entree 10 after your hint.
DeleteTortie, in Entree 6, the series is the same as in Entree 1, but in words, not numerals.
Well, someone is criminally late with hints. Withhold half their salary!
DeleteApp 1: changing the second letter of widow to the next vowel also yields a palindrome.
App 2: in the old timey days they'd try to do this to gain cattle, now they try to do this to win the election battle.
App 3: Members of a certain party celebrated losing someone last week; members of a certain team celebrated winning last night.
App 4: Unlike Charlie Brown, Ich liebe Lucy!
App 5: This actor sometimes fell for the Ottoman Empire.
App 6: The two foes were generally not civil, even though they were.
App 7: Helps if you've heard my Broken English.
The last four letters of the first noun in App 3 is something caused by the "someone else" in the puzzle five years ago.
DeleteThanks for the additional hints. I was able to solve App #3 and Entree #6. Also found an alt person for App #3.
DeleteYes, thanks, Eco. The hints allowed me to finish the Apps.
DeleteOnly thing I know for sure that I didn't know before is that Lego was going to show the answer to Entree #10 accidentally. Other than that, anything I already solved was just confirmed. Got nothing for what I have yet to solve, however.

ReplyDeleteMY PROGRESS SO FAR...
ReplyDeleteHave answers for everything but App #3 (is the answer the last name only?) and Entrees #2, 4, and 6. I'm probably on the right track for Entree #4.
DeleteFor App #3 the puzzle only involves the descriptions used about that person. Both words are nouns, but some low-intelligence people use them as adjectives. The actual person was just tossed in for fun.
DeleteOh, OK! For some reason, I thought the name was involved.
DeleteIF YOU HAVE COMMENTS THAT DO NOT PERTAIN TO ANY OF THE FOUR CATEGORIES ABOVE, YOU MAY WRITE THEM BELOW THIS POST. THANK YOU.
ReplyDeleteHappy Friday to all, hopefully in places that are having better weather than we are here in AL. They've been talking about flash flooding on the local news last night and today in our area, and it has been raining off and on today. Nothing too serious, just flooding. Anyway, we didn't eat out this evening, also because Mia Kate did something wrong and is now(as far as I know)still grounded. They did let her come over here to clean house, but not for very long. Mom and I are fine, but she says she was feeling a little dizzy earlier today. She's asleep in the recliner right now. We watched "Celebrity Wheel of Fortune" an hour ago, and I fixed a chicken Alfredo(capitalized in this case?)pizza and Mom had a Healthy Choice dinner(pineapple chicken). We were almost going to watch a rerun of "The Masked Singer" tonight, like the TV listings in the Weekend paper said, but then they had a special on about Rob Reiner's murder. Thank God for Ryan and Vanna and co.
ReplyDeleteSolved the Schpuzzle already, and Appetizers #4, #5, and #6, and the Slice, and Entrees #7, #8, #9, and #10, but that's it for now. Looking forward to any and all hints to come soon from all participants contributing to this week's blog.
Good luck in solving to all, and please stay safe, and I hope we'll all have better weather by Wednesday. Cranberry out!

From a nine-letter article of apparel remove three letters that spell a French article (not an “article of apparel” but a “particle-of-speech”).
Rearrange the result and add an “s” to the end to spell a word for places where such articles of apparel might be stored. This plural word is also a word for the articles of apparel themselves.
