Vacationing in Hulaluau, Hawaii!
Will Shortz’s January 23rd NPR Weekend Edition Sunday puzzle, created by Keith Rode, of Woodland, California, reads:Name a state capital. Take the last two letters of the city’s name and the first two letters of its state’s name. Then rearrange these letters to name an activity closely associated with this city. What is it?
Puzzleria!s Riffing Off Shortz And Rode Slices read:
ENTREE #1Name a puzzle-maker, first and last names. Rearrange the first four letters of his name, then rearrange the last five letters of his name. The result will be two creatures – one that takes wing and another who was king.... or, more ominously, a preyer and a slayer.

Every Friday at Joseph Young’s Puzzleria! we publish a new menu of fresh word puzzles, number puzzles, logic puzzles, puzzles of all varieties and flavors. We cater to cravers of scrumptious puzzles!
Our master chef, Grecian gourmet puzzle-creator Lego Lambda, blends and bakes up mysterious (and sometimes questionable) toppings and spices (such as alphabet soup, Mobius bacon strips, diced snake eyes, cubed radishes, “hominym” grits, anagraham crackers, rhyme thyme and sage sprinklings.)
Please post your comments below. Feel free also to post clever and subtle hints that do not give the puzzle answers away. Please wait until after 3 p.m. Eastern Time on Wednesdays to post your answers and explain your hints about the puzzles. We serve up at least one fresh puzzle every Friday.

In the South when it is really hot out they say," It's hotter than Satan's cat today. But today they might say?? It's fixin to freeze about now.?? I know the peaches are a hurtin today.
ReplyDeleteBreaking news: It's snowing in Waleska.
ReplyDeleteWe just got a brush from this one. Looks like it's zeroing in on geo's condo and points north. It is on the chilly side here. The power company loves it. With them around, who needs vampires?
Deletepjb, the App II intended solution does not start with, or contain, T. Of course. one would not offhandedly rule out the possibility of well turned out solutions meeting the intended criteria.
ReplyDeleteI managed to solve your # II and #IV. But the rest, well, no amount of time spent on them did any good.
DeleteHaving found pjb's post in the other section from this week, I believe he said it was his #V's answer that contained a "T", not II.
DeleteIt was II, but I have the wrong answer. Mine was TUNISIA, which is an anagram of IN A SUIT.
DeletepjbSaysYouCan'tBlameAGuyForTryingOutAHunch
That seems like a pretty good answer, even if not the intended one.
DeleteIf i have #3 it is a homophone of an animal.IF I HAVE.
DeleteIF I HAVE anagrams to "A HI-FIVE".
DeletePossible alternate?
DeleteOr possibly the intended solution.
DeleteI think I'll go ahead and post hints to all the Apps in a little while. A tad early maybe, but there's been some discussion. Maybe Lego won't have me shot at dawn.
I only have number 5. Geo is in DC?
ReplyDeleteBethesda, Maryland, I think he posted. I could be mistaken.
DeleteIts colder than a well digger's backside.
ReplyDeleteI guess #4 is not the Beavers?
ReplyDeleteNope.
DeleteBut its mascot DOES begin with a 'b'.
Delete"Laura Nyro " tribute.
DeleteGeorgia Bulldogs again.!!
DeleteI was considering what would be a reasonable Hint for App II, and pjb has posted a suit-able one. So, a bit early perhaps, but:
ReplyDeleteApp II: pjb's solution country is in the immediate neighborhood of the intended solution.
Since there has been discussion in general, here goes with Hints for the Appetizers:
ReplyDeleteI. Separately, Al, Benny, and The Deacon recently attended such an event.
II. pjb's well suited conclusion is in the immediate neighborhood of the intended solution.
III. The description applies in a large majority of other countries.
IV. Attack this one by the number. There once was an authentic bread cartoonist on campus.
V. Cut 'em off at The Pass. Double crosses.
Thanks for posting those hints, GB.
DeleteI'll post hints for my puzzles later today (Monday).

Monday Hints:
DeleteThe city is a state capital... not Saint Paul, but there is a Minnesota connection to the answer.
Bafflementery Appetizer:
Please refer to GB's excellent hints in our Comments Section, at January 30, 2022 at 5:46 PM.

Can you see this tool in a dentist office?
DeletePlantsmith,
DeleteYou probably won't see it in the part of the office where the dentist does the actual drilling, filling, polishing, pulling, cleaning, etc. ...
But, quite likely, you'll see it in the part of the office where dental patients come to check in, and make a payment and follow-up appointment when they check out.
The tool that is the answer to my puzzle doesn't need to be sharpened... unlike its "companion tool" that occasionally generates messy mistakes that need to be "cleaned up"... which our tool is good at doing.

I don't think i have ever used that??
DeleteDoes the Seattle outdoor sculpture park have a giant one of these? A mega tool. Courtesy of Billie Gates?
ReplyDeletehttps://www.tasteofhome.com/article/cast-iron-steak/
ReplyDeleteI always learn something here. I did not know you are supposed to use Kosher salt for cooking a steak in a skillet. Regular salt is too fine and can lead to a kind of briny taste on the steak.
The Seattle outdoor sculpture park is very weird and strange. I have been there more than once. The story behind the man-child sculpture, with the fountains, is very disturbing. It is a controversial art piece as many are. But who can really live without controversy?
ReplyDeleteWhich one you stuck on, pjb?
