PUZZLERIA! SLICES: OVER (1110 + 98) SERVED

Welcome to our February 16th edition of Joseph Young’s Puzzleria!
Our featured puzzle this week is another excellent wordplayful Appetizer contributed by our friend Patrick J. Berry (screen name: cranberry) of Jasper, Alabama. It involves a singer, sitcoms, movies, married couples, and a talk show host. Tis a veritable “Roll Tide” stickler about role players.
Also on our menus this week are a QUARTET ⇩⇩⇩⇩ of “Let’s play doctor” Riffing-Off-Shortz-Slices;
ONE ⇩ “Let’s play the name game” Slice; and
ONE ⇩ “Cabinet fever” Dessert.

So, TGIF: Think Good, It’s Friday.
And, TPFI: Thank Patrick For Inventiveness.
As puzzlemaster Will Shortz once said, you can have a lot of fun ðŸ˜Š on the Puzzleria! blog.
Appetizer Menu

Casting Connubial Couples Appetizer:
Sitcoms on Satcoms and silver screen stars

The two lead characters in a 2010 movie share their first names with two lead characters in a popular long-running current TV sitcom. Both pairs of actors portray married couples.
Drop a letter from the sitcom-wife-character’s last name, then rearrange the letters in her full name to get the full name of a female singer who gained popularity in the 1980s. The husband in the movie admits to his wife that this singer is the object of his sexual fantasies.
The movie and the sitcom both have two-word titles, and both stars ()  in the movie also had lead roles in their own sitcoms. The female movie actor helped create and has occasionally made cameo appearances on a sitcom starring an actress who was also a castmate of the male movie actor in his sitcom.
One more thing: Change one letter in the movie title, and you’ll get the name of the talk show franchise originated by a host who would later switch networks.
Shortly before he retired (but subsequently came back looking much different, and appearing in a different format), the movie actress surprised him by doing something to ensure that “this would be the last time (she would) have to really dress up for a talk show.”
What are the titles of the movie and the sitcom?
What are the characters’ full names in both the movie and sitcom?
 Who is the singer?
Who is the actress who has worked with both movie leads, and what shows are these?
What talk show was it, who was its host, and how did the actress in the movie surprise him?

Name Game Slice:
Charles Charles bo-barles, bo-na-na fanna fo-farles, fee fi fo-farles...

Think of five people with the first names Charles, Hayden, Mia, Ryan and Samuel. If you have the right five you ought to be able to tell what they all share in common.
What is it?
Hint: All these people are sufficiently well-known to have Wikipedia pages.
Brian could be substituted for Charles,” if you like.

Riffing Off Shortz Slices:
Amazing Grace Anatomy

Will Shortz’s February 11th NPR Weekend Edition Sunday puzzle reads:
Name part of the human body in six letters. Add an R and rearrange the result to name a part of the body in seven letters. What is it?
Puzzleria!’s Riffing Off Shortz Slices read:
ONE:
Delete the final letter of a seven-letter word for a part of the human body. Reverse the order the fourth, fifth and sixth letters to form a three-letter synonym of the word formed by the first three letters. What is this body part?
TWO:
Name part of the human body in seven letters. Subtract an R and rearrange the remaining letters to form names for two creatures  with very similar shapes. What body part is this? What creatures are these?
THREE:
💃 Name part of the human body in seven letters.
💃 Subtract one of the consonants that appears twice in the word and rearrange the result to name a part of the body in six letters.
💃 Remove the final three letters from the seven-letter body part to name a four-letter body part.
💃 Finally, remove from the seven-letter body part four letters that can be rearanged to form a synonym for “story.” Rearrange the remaining three letters to form a body part.
What are the seven-letter body part, the six-letter body part, the four-letter body part and the three-letter body part?
FOUR:
(Note: Do not attempt to solve this puzzle before or during dining... or while ingesting food of any sort!)
Name part of the human body in six letters. Add an R and rearrange the result to name a part of the body in seven letters.
The first four letters in each of these body parts can be rearranged to form the same vulgar four-letter term that is associated with one of the body parts.
What is this vulgar term and what are the two body parts?

Dessert Menu

Quemoy And Diplomatsu Dessert:
Henry Cabinet Lodge?

Name a member of a United States president’s cabinet who served sometime during the 20th century. Add a letter within the first name to form the name of a country.
Replace the first letter of the last name with two different letters to form the name of a different country.
Who is this cabinet member?
Hint: The late cabinet member’s name is still occasionally in the news.

Every Friday at Joseph Young’s Puzzleria! we publish a new menu of fresh word puzzles, number puzzles, logic puzzles, puzzles of all varieties and flavors. We cater to cravers of scrumptious puzzles!

Our master chef, Grecian gourmet puzzle-creator Lego Lambda, blends and bakes up mysterious (and sometimes questionable) toppings and spices (such as alphabet soup, Mobius bacon strips, diced snake eyes, cubed radishes, “hominym” grits, anagraham crackers, rhyme thyme and sage sprinklings.)

Please post your comments below. Feel free also to post clever and subtle hints that do not give the puzzle answers away. Please wait until after 3 p.m. Eastern Time on Wednesdays to post your answers and explain your hints about the puzzles. We serve up at least one fresh puzzle every Friday.

We invite you to make it a habit to “Meet at Joe’s!” If you enjoy our weekly puzzle party, please tell your friends about Joseph Young’s Puzzleria! Thank you.

    1. Paul,
If Puzzleria! ever presents a puzzle involving trout, walleye, bass, flounder, tuna, carp, bluegill, guppies and groupers, we'll have to find little fish icons of various colors.
In the meantime, here is a quick aquatic riddle to tide you over:
What is another name for a fishing tournament?
(Hint: The answer is two words of two syllables each, beginning with a P and C respectively... but not really so respectively, and not really so PC.)

  3. I took an initial tackle upon this new P! during the wee hours (as usual) but then had to quit, due to utter exhaustion. Although I can never put together Paul's interesting way of posting, I managed to pull off the Appetizer, and the first three Riff Offs. No luck yet on the Menu Slice, the fourth Riff Off, or yon Dessert.

  4. And, grin, just worked out the Dessert, now that i'm not quite so wiped out. DId manage to get lucky in fairly early on, looking up what turned out the be the correct president, and my eye falling on the name required.

    1. VT,
Happy to hear that both you and Paul cracked the Dessert. I thought that one might have been a tough nut.
You already know the answer to the fourth Riff-Off.

  5. Happy Friday everyone! I hope you're all enjoying my Appetizer, and I have a great hint for it in case anyone needs help with it, but for now I'll just say the movie in question was on earlier this week on a particular cable channel(twice)and leave it at that. As for my own progress, I think I've got the Menu(though I'm sure there must be something more to it), I have all the Riff-Offs(and Lego, you're right, something about #4 seems awfully familiar...hmm...), and I found the right website for figuring out the Dessert, but of course I'm not telling, or I'd spoil it for everyone else. So unless you've got any further information on the Menu, Lego, I'm done! But as I said before, I have got a great hint regarding my puzzle, and I feel especially playful this week, so I'm just gonna sit back and watch the rest of y'all do the legwork. Let me know if you need help, I'll be here. Otherwise, I'm done here. Have fun, kids!

  6. BTW cool photos, Lego! There's one photo somewhere on this week's edition which might lead to the answer a little easier than the others! It's an indirect connection, but a connection nonetheless!

    1. Thank you, cranberry. Cool puzzle!
For the Name Game Slice, NGS (beneath the MENU heading), perhaps this may confirm or negate your answer:
Of Charles (or Brian), Hayden, Mia, Ryan and Samuel, only Charles and Samuel are "late."

    4. Thank you so much for the hint, Lego. Some weren't as obscure, given that I'd thought of the Mia and the Ryan (although not WHY until now)....so I have everyone except the Hayden for whom I can't find a last name that 'fits in.'

      Delete
    5. Hayden's is the last name which, along with Mia's, is the longest stretch. It's a word usually preceded by a diminutive modifier. I am confident you have solved this slice.

  7. OK, now I know I've got the Menu puzzle! And now, some additional hints for the Appetizer:
A female co-star in the movie shares her last name with a legendary "animator", shall we say, in order to make it a little more ambiguous. This "animator" created many different characters, a lot of whom have been seen mostly on children's TV(narrowing it down a bit, PBS, and trust me, there's a reason I'll at least reveal that much, so please read on). One of the characters has a two-word name. The first word of this name is the same as the character the actress from the movie plays on a popular TV show currently on the air. The voice of the children's TV character is provided by the same man who provides that of a certain character in a very popular series of sci-fi movies. One of these movies(the one he's featured most prominently in)has a title that includes the one-word title of the movie actress's show. Another co-star in the original movie mentioned shares a name(though spelled slightly different)with the host of a primetime program also on PBS.
That's all I have for y'all. Good luck!

    1. Thanks, cranberry, for those hints. You are a truly an accomplished hinter as well as a hintee! We really appreciate your puzzles on this blog. The more variety, the better! We have had more than a handful of various clever creators who have contributed excellent puzzles to this Puzzleria! blog over its nearly 4-year existence. I thank them all. And I also thank all who join us in solving (and attempting to solve) these generously contributed puzzles.

  8. Cyrus Vance was Jimmy Carter's Secretaty of State. Cyprus is an island nation in the Mediterranean. "Cypress is a common name for various coniferous trees or shrubs of northern temperate regions that belong to the family Cupressaceae." Some of them inhabit swamps. I tend to get Cyprus and cypress confused because I'm lazy and most vowels are schwas to me.

Tina Fey removed her dress on Late Night with David Letterman. She starred in Date Night with Steve Carell. They played Phil and Claire Foster. Phil and Claire Dunphy are characters in Modern Family. Tina Fey has writer, producer, creator, and acting credits for Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, which stars Ellie Kemper, who played Erin Hannon in The Office, which starred Steve Carell. I've never watched Modern Family, so I'd never heard of Claire Dunphy, and I didn't see Date Night, so I had no idea who Phil Foster fantasized about, but the image of Tina Fey in her foundation garments is etched in my memory. Cyndi Lauper had a recurring role on Mad About You, but I don't think she ever appeared on Laverne and Shirley. That was Phil Foster.

Rip-off Four was a restatement of the original NPR puzzle with a dollop of embellishment; lego's hint made that plain as the nose on one's face.

ELLIE KEMPER("The Office" with Carell, "The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt" with Fey)
LATE NIGHT(with David Letterman); On "The Late Show with David Letterman", Fey did a striptease and gave Letterman her dress. This revealed underwear that had "BYE DAVE!" printed on the front and "#Last Dress Ever" on the back.
DATE NIGHT also starred TARAJI P. HENSON, who plays COOKIE on EMPIRE. JIM HENSON created COOKIE MONSTER for Sesame Street, with Frank Oz providing the voice. Oz also voiced Yoda in THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK, part of the original Star Wars trilogy.
DATE NIGHT also starred MARK WAHLBERG, not to be confused with MARK L. WALBERG, host of Antiques Roadshow.
The picture of Jimmy Fallon and Will Ferrell is a possible reminder that Fallon and Fey co-anchored Weekend Update for four years on SNL, or that Ferrell and Wahlberg costarred in "The Other Guys", "Daddy's Home" and "Daddy's Home 2".

DATE NIGHT could be changed to LATE NIGHT, originally hosted by DAVID LETTERMAN on NBC. Before Letterman left CBS, Fey appeared and actually did a striptease on the air, showing off underwear that said "BYE DAVE!"
