“Drink and sing to celebrate the New Year”; A Dot, Clot & Sinew; Tonic Spiked With Tanqueray? Egypt’s 10 Plagues... Plus Ague? Tabletop tipping and toppling? Condiment & Continental Caribbean Shore;

Schpuzzle of the Week:

Tabletop tipping and toppling?

Think of three tools that might be found together on a tabletop. Write them side-by-side-by-side in alphabetical order according to the final letter of each.

(For example, the seasonings paprika, pepper and salt on a kitchen table would appear in that order, as would the tools rasp, pliers and malle... but because of their ending letters not their beginning letters.)

Number the 14 letters of your three tools from left to right, #1 through #14, as in the above chart.

~ 3-2-1 spells a liquid in a bottle;

~ 11-5-14 spells what may be dipped in the bottle;

~ 7-6-4 describes the bottle (if it tips over and keeps rolling) in relation to the table top;

~ 13-12-11-10 spells what might then be exclaimed!

What are the tabletop tools?

What is the bottled liquid?

What word describes the bottle vis-à-vis the tabletop?

What might then be exclaimed!

Riffing Off Shortz And Young Entrees:

Egypt’s 10 Plagues... Plus Ague?

Will Shortz’s December 28th Weekend Edition Sunday puzzle, created by Joseph Young of St. Cloud, Minnesota, reads:

Think of a two-syllable word in four letters. Add two letters in front and one letter behind to make a one-syllable word in seven letters. What words are these?

Puzzleria!s Riffing Off Shortz And Young Entrees read:

ENTREE #1

“After their sojourn at the Museum of Tal Basta Antiquities in Zagazig, the tour group reluctantly departed to explore other “one-day’s-stays” in Egypt.”

Take two words from that sentence. Remove the penultimate letter from one and the ultimate letter for the other.

Add an “h” to the remaining letters and rearrange the result to spell the name of a puzzle-maker.

Who is the puzzle-maker and what are the two words that were “delettered”?

Note: Entrees #2 through #7 are the handiwork of Nodd (of “Nodd ready for prime time” fame).

ENTREE #2

Think of a two-syllable word in three letters. Add two letters at the end to make a one-
syllable word in five letters.

What words are these?

Note: The five-letter, one-syllable word does not end in “s”.

ENTREE #3

Think of a two-syllable word in eight letters. Replace the first letter with two other letters to
make a one-syllable word in nine letters.
What words are these?

ENTREE #4

What words are these?

Note: Entrees #8 through #9 were composed by of Ecoarchitect, author of "Econfusions,"  (of “Econfusions” fame).

ENTREE #8

Think of a two-syllable word in four letters.

Add one letter in front and two letters behind to

What words are these?

(Hint: The one-syllable word crops up occasionally in the world of competitive journalism.)

ENTREE #9

Think of a two-syllable word in four letters.

Add one letter in front and two letters behind to make a one-syllable word in seven letters.

What words are these?

(Note: Most dictionaries consider this two-syllable word to be a monosyllable... although
many from the deep American South may pronounce it as two syllables.)

      “Drink and sing to celebrate the New Year”

      Bobby posted the following hint in his January 4, 2026 at 10:57 AM post:
      Hint:
      Entering into the new year is like going through a sliding door.

      Hot-Pepper Hors d’Oeuvre
      Condiment & Continental Caribbean Shore
      The three-and-a-half thousand-mile shoreline in the Caribbean Region is the perimeter of an island nation.
      The condiment begins with a diet soft drink and ends with the first 60% of a mouthwash brand.

      Small Screen Stage & Cinema Slice:
      A Dot, Clot & Sinew

      "A Dot, Clot & Sinew" is a near giveaway. So...

      ENTREE #1

      Take two words from that sentence?
      The first word was in the title of an early Moody Blues album.
      The letters in the second word can be rearranged to spell a Cobb and a Steely Dan single title.

      See Nodd's hints for his Entrees #2 through #7 in his January 4, 2026 at 3:28 PM post.

      The "beverage container and something that may (or may not!) make the contents of the container more desirable" are three-letter words. The container has a vowel in the middle; the "more-desirable-making something" has a consonant in the middle.

      Just figured out a possible answer for Entree #9. Like Nodd said, it uses a homophone. I was initially using the wrong four-letter word, so I was stuck until now. (I hadn't solved it by the comment above, so that's why I deleted the comment!)

      Still unsure about the intended answer for the App. Is the hint about a famous dance routine, because if it is, I can't find anything. The singer did appear in another "door" movie. I also found a movie that stars the other singerr's mother, but that seems too indirect. I also didn't find any possible third answers with the hint.

      Hmm, I was stuck on the singer you have for the longest time, and never could find a brand name starting with the right letters. I finally found one, but it's the complete brand name, and not just the first six letters. As far as I know, the singer I have is not really famous for being a singer. She's more famous because of who her parents are. Her first name is the last name (stage name; really middle name) of a more famous singer-songwriter.

    11. I thought the complete brand name was three words, but maybe that's wrong.

  8. Happy New Year to everyone on this mighty blog!
    Mom and I are fine. She is now 83 years young as of Dec. 28(her birthday). We spent New Year's Eve watching Andy Cohen and Anderson Cooper on CNN, and a little of Dick Clark/Ryan Seacrest on ABC. Then there was "Fireworks Around the World" on NBC, followed by "Coast To Coast Countdown" on CBS. That last one showed clips of 38 Special and Styx performing their hits live. Then I showered on New Year's Day that night. Tonight we ate at Cracker Barrel with Bryan and Mia Kate. Mom and I rode with them as Bryan drove. Mom didn't want to drive at night with it raining like it's been doing. I had the BBQ Smokestack burger, bacon mac 'n' cheese, a cup of chili, two biscuits, and a Coke Zero. Mom had shrimp and rice and a Sprite. Bryan had a breakfast meal with sirloin tips, and some water. Mia Kate had chicken and dumplings, and I think she had water, too. She also said she has a birthday party to go to tomorrow at 4:00pm. Surprisingly, there weren't as many other people eating in the place as there usually is. Must be because it was raining out and it was just after New Year's. I also got me a PEANUTS calendar in the gift shop area of Cracker Barrel. Then we regrouped and came back home, with Bryan picking the rest of us up in the car out front. Bryan also ordered a few things for Renae and Maddy and Morgan to eat at home. Mia Kate saved hers in a Styrofoam box. I'm just about to do the Prize Crossword on the Guardian website, but I checked in here first. Is it now going to be the answers AND the new puzzles on Wednesday at around the same time? Imagine my surprise when I dialed up P! and there were new puzzles instead of the past week's page! I already managed to get Entree #1 and the Dessert(easiest)solved. Looking forward to all the hints to come later on the weekend.
    Good look in solving to all, and please stay safe, and may this year be a lot better than the last! Cranberry out!
