PUZZLERIA! SLICES: OVER 5πe2 SERVED

Schpuzzle of the Week:

Recollecting Rejected Jettisoned Hijacked-Jet Words!

The headline read:

“Jet Hijacked, Suspect _______  _____ ”

The missing words sound like the name of a Roman governor.

The first word of this name sounds like a form of exercise

The second word becomes a form of exercise if you add an “s” to the end.

What is this headline?

Who is the Roman governor?

What are the two forms of exercise?

(Note: This week’s Appetizer comes courtesy of a very inventive puzzle-maker and very valued friend of Puzzleria!)

The Former LieuTENant Was No 10

1. 🪖Name a military rank that contains a number.  That rank is held by one typically receiving, not giving, orders.

Remove the number and replace it with another number.  The result is an order from which most members of the military are drawn.  What are the rank and the order?

Screens Come in All Sizes

2. 🎥The four famous actors who created the iconic screen characters Rowdy, Maverick, Hawkeye, and K all appeared together in only one movie.
That movie has a two-word title.  Consecutive letters in that title name the
profession of one of those characters.  Other consecutive letters in that title name something that most two-word titles have.

What is the movie title, the profession, and the thing that almost all two-word titles have?

Good Sports All Round

[The following is a riff of the April 5, 2026, NPR Challenge.]

3. 🏈🚙Take the last name of a great sports figure.  Add two letters to the end and rearrange all those letters to get the names of
two popular Sport Utility Vehicle models.

Who is the sports figure, and what are the SUV models?

They Taste Terrible if Mixed

[The following is a riff of the December 31, 2025, Puzzle Fun Appetizer by Bobby Jacobs.]

4. 🧉🎸The first word in a drink followed by the brand name of personal care products spells, in order left to right, the name of a famous musician and recording industry executive. Who is it?

Satire Inside Out Makes Irates

[The following is a riff of a published cartoon by Skilly Creators Syndicate.]

5. 😠Take the surname of a current political newsmaker.  Reverse two adjacent consonants, and rotate the final letter in the name 180 degrees.

The result is an expletive some say describes the politician.

Who is the politician and the resulting epithet?

well-known 20th-Century novel... twice.

What are these seven words?

What is the title of the novel?

Riffing Off Shortz And Kalish Slices:

“Did Papa John Creach’s Fiddle make Screeches?!”

Will Shortz’s June 21st NPR Weekend Edition Sunday puzzle, created by Evan Kalish of Bayside, New York, reads:

Take the name of a nocturnal creature, in two words. The first word is a spooky sound. Move the last letter of the first word to the start of the second word and you'll get another spooky, nocturnal sound. What is the creature and what are the sounds?

Puzzleria!s Riffing Off Shortz And Kalish Slices read:

ENTREE #1

Take the  letters in Jesse Garon’s twin brother’s first name, the first name of Billie Jean Horton’s and Audrey Williams’ hubby, and of Vincent Furnier’s slightly misspelled first
name of his stage name.

Use only those letters to spell the name of a puzzle-maker. Who is it?

(Note: Entrees #2 through #7 are the brainchildren of our friend and talented resident riffmeister Nodd.)

ENTREE #2

Name a mostly nocturnal creature.

Change the third letter to the preceding letter of the alphabet.

Rearrange to name two more nocturnal creatures. What are the three creatures?

ENTREE #3

Name a mostly nocturnal creature.

Move the fourth letter four places later in the alphabet to spell a garment worn during a kind of nighttime performance. Or move that letter two places earlier in the alphabet to spell the
first name of a musician who was famous for being a “night owl.”

What are the creature and garment, and who is the musician?

ENTREE #4

Take an informal name for a diurnal creature.

Move the fourth letter five places later in the alphabet to name a sound made by a nocturnal creature. What are the creature and sound?

ENTREE #5

The first word is the name of a mostly nocturnal creature.

The second word is an anagram of something seen at night.

What are the creatures, and what else is seen at night?

ENTREE #6

Name a nocturnal creature.

Change the first vowel to the next vowel in the alphabet. Rearrange to spell (1) a word describing the nighttime and (2) an event typically held at night.

  5. Happy Friday evening to all upon this mighty(sort of unfinished)blog!
Mom and I are fine. We just got back from a new place in town called "Main street Market". My oldest niece Morgan works as a waitress there, so Bryan and Renae and Mia Kate wanted to go visit her and try the food. I didn't even know Mom and I would be coming too, until earlier this afternoon, when Mia Kate texted Mom. Mom and I had already gone grocery shopping earlier this week(Aldi on Monday, Food City on Wednesday), and after we got back Mom had told me that, considering how much groceries we had bought at both places on both days, we really couldn't be affording to go out to eat much anymore for the time being. So, like a fool, I didn't bother to shower or do any laundry last night to be able to go out tonight. If anything, I just assumed even if they did want to go out this evening, Mom would probably let them down easy and just say no. Well, imagine my surprise when, after Mia Kate's text, Mom decided we should go, too! And I couldn't really take a shower or do laundry that fast before time to go, so I just made sure to put enough deodorant on and I just threw something on that still needed to be washed, and then I hoped for the best.(And yes, I did brush my teeth and use mouthwash and wash my face, but I usually do that anyway, so I didn't really feel it was necessary to mention it earlier.)Anyway, Bryan sent Mom their menu online, and she read out loud what all they had(which was a rather limited selection, BTW), and I said I'll just wait and look over the menu when we actually get there. So we got there a little later, and the menu was just as limited as Mom made it sound. It had "craft soda" listed, but Morgan informed us that it wouldn't be the regular soft drinks to which we're accustomed. Still, she said I could go look over their selection in their refrigerator, but the easiest thing would be for her to just bring some water(which came in a big bottle, and I had finished it all by the end of the meal!). So I just drank water with the meal. Mom had suggested I get the glazed chicken, which comes with potatoes and leeks(onions), and either a house salad or a cup of soup. There was also a blackberry dessert that would also come with it, but I thought the profiterole tart listed under "Desserts" sounded much better, so I had the salad, entree/sides, and my choice for dessert. And it did not disappoint, not one bit of it, not even the leeks(which were a little hard to cut, but were still good). Only thing I had trouble with were the little bread bites for the whole table, which were a little too crunchy, but I still ate them. I let Mom eat all the little tomato slices from my salad, and she actually ordered a "steak salad", which she wasn't too crazy about. She said the vegetables were a little too small, and the steak was a bit hard to cut or chew. Nevertheless, she brought home the leftovers. I actually thought her croutons were pretty good, considering how the aforementioned bread bites were. I think Bryan and Renae both had some kind of pork dish, and Mia Kate had some pasta(sort of like mac 'n' cheese, but not exactly). She brought her pasta home as well. All in all, it may be a bit much for the regular Jasper crowd, but I liked it myself. Mom told me on the way home we probably wouldn't be coming back all that often, though. Oh well. We've got enough groceries to last a few months at least! No problem there! We also might not be celebrating the 4th all together, BTW. Mia Kate said she'd be spending it at "The Riveras'"(Renae's sister and her husband Ed, and their children). Just sitting around(and occasionally swimming in)the pool. To the best of my knowledge, no one else there at the table was invited. End of Part 1.

  6. Part 2
So far I've only solved Appetizers #1 and #4(the latter represents quite a different take on the same wordplay from the original puzzle created by Bobby Jacobs, according to the text). I might also have the answer to the Schpuzzle as well, although while the last name if the Roman governor(if I am in fact right)does become a type of exercise when the S is added to the end, I can't seem to get anywhere with the first name. Hopefully there will be some clarification later, when the rest of Puzzleria! finally does appear, and the subsequent hints are sure to follow as well. BTW The only thing I am sure about with the Hors d'Oeuvre is that it is spelled BARNEY, with an E. I thought everyone knew that!
Good luck in solving to all, and please stay safe, and let's all be thankful that the "comment is too long" notification did not appear too many times for me as I was trying to publish Part 1. Cranberry out!

    1. I think maybe the first name of the Roman governor is a bit of a reach.

    2. Quite so, Paul... great point. Other first names that may come to mind are Ewart, Julius and Gogea.
